Lloyd Loom Furniture
For hundreds of years wicker was one preferred method of building furniture. It was relatively inexpensive and durable, but it did have its drawbacks. One very handy American born entrepreneur felt that he could do a better job at creating a product that was similar to wicker, yet better. Marshall Burns Lloyd, after many successful and unsuccessful business attempts started studying the art of wicker furniture building. After observing the process in detail, he determined that he could do it better.
Instead of using rattan, cane or willow branches, which tend to get snagged in clothing, Lloyd used wire which was wrapped in paper and perfected a method of weaving it together, much like wicker furniture making. It wasn't long before his method of building furniture became very popular. With his new methods and advances in technology, Lloyd could manufacture furniture 30 times faster than traditional wicker furniture building.
The appeal of Lloyd Loom Furniture was that it was durable and comfortable and did not have the same issues with clothing getting stuck to it like wicker furniture. Soon the Lloyd Loom method of furniture making was being used to build chairs, couches, foot stools, ottomans and even baby carriages, which proved to be incredibly popular.
Lloyd Loom furniture was so popular that at one time Marilyn Monroe was photographed sitting on a Lloyd Loom chair and they were used in the Royal Boxes at Wimbledon, and still are to this day. After selling the patent to the process of making the furniture, production moved to the UK where it is still produced today.
