French Art Deco Furniture
French Art deco furniture was produced from the period of 1909 to 1939, but is nearly impossible to define as a single style. The French influence came from what is called "Arts Decoratifs", or translated, decorative arts. Decorative arts emphasized the use of furniture, glass, ceramics and textiles in design. The Paris Exposition in 1925 was instrumental in helping to bring French design and style to the world and to establish France as an important part of the design field.
Art Deco furniture brought in influences from Egypt into the design as well as the use of materials that were previously not available. Exotic woods such as ebony and caucasian burr walnut were brought in and polished to a high gloss finish. Other materials such as plastic, wrought iron, wood veneers and lacquers were all utilized, as well as a return to the use of hard lines. One of the most influential designers of French Art Deco furniture was Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann. Another designer by the name of Maurice Dufrene was also influential in French Art Deco design and was instrumental in helping to gain the acceptance of mass produced Art Deco furniture.
In recent times, French Art Deco furniture has seen a resurgence in popularity as many designers and homeowners are looking for distinct and unique styling for their homes. These unique pieces of antique French furniture can integrate into any décor and can become a focal point for a room with their dramatic yet appealing design.
