Art Deco Sideboards
Sideboards were first built in the 18th Century and were used for serving food and for displaying one's fine china and silverware. They are typically waist high, and have many drawers and cupboards for storage of the serving dishes and utensils, but also the dining linen as well. Sideboards were not very popular until the 19th Century when most households could afford to have a room in their home that was specifically for dining.
Most homes today have dining rooms and sideboards are very helpful if one entertains a great deal as it leaves plenty of space on the dining room table for place settings. More and more people are deciding to decorate with antiques and one popular style to decorate with is that of Art Deco.
Art Deco sideboards are traditionally made of oak, walnut and pine and often had inlays of other types of wood or glass as well as wood veneer, which became common in the Art Deco style. Some sideboards also had glass doors to better show off the family china. Art Deco sideboards are commonly linear in shape, with very square lines and often are quite plain with very few ornate carvings. Depending on the maker, some sideboards sit directly on the floor, and others have ornately carved legs. Because of this simplicity, Art Deco sideboards are able to fit into any of today's dining rooms, no matter what the style.
