Art Deco Mantel Clocks
Mantel clocks are small mobile clocks that are traditionally placed on a mantel above a fireplace. The form was first developed in the mid-1700's but were different in that they had handles so they were even more mobile. Because simplicity was a large characteristic of the Art Deco style, a mantel was usually quite sparse with perhaps the clock being the only item on display. Art Deco mantel clocks were therefore quite beautiful, almost like works of art themselves.
Art Deco mantel clocks are made from different materials and can come in various shapes. More traditional mantel clocks are handcrafted from woods such as walnut, oak or mahogany and have a typical arched case around a round clock face. Marble is also a popular material for Art Deco mantel clocks, with the face affixed to the marble. Square or triangular clock faces are popular on marble clocks. Some Art Deco mantel clocks have sculptures incorporated into the style of the clock so that it can serve both as a practical clock, but also as a beautiful art piece.
One popular English clock-maker is Smiths. The Smith English Clock Company was first formed in 1931, but they had been making clocks since the mid-1800's. In order to identify a true Art Deco Smith clock, look to see if the movement is enclosed in black Bakelite and look for the trademark “Satiric”. The name on the movement case should also say “Smiths English Clocks.”
