Art Deco Lamps
At the turn of the twentieth century, the majority of homes had electricity, so in the 1920's, it was still a relatively new thing to be able to light every corner of one's home with just the flip of a switch. When the Art Deco style became popular in the 1920's and 1930's, it managed to influence every aspect of the home, including lighting fixtures. Art Deco lamps became something more of a piece of art rather than just a lighting fixture and were not only popular in homes, but also in commercial and public spaces.
Many Art Deco lamps actually have sculptures incorporated into the lamps. Often the lamp is not how we would think of a lamp today, with a base and a shade. The lighting element was usually worked into the form of art as well. The materials that seem to be most popular for creating Art Deco lamps are metal and glass – often the glass is hand blown into interesting shapes and incorporated with many colours. Because of the materials used to make the lamps, it usually made them very heavy.
If one can find an authentic lamp made by a popular Art Deco lamp manufacturer, it can be quite lucrative. There are many people that are avid collectors of Art Deco lighting because it's not only unique and beautiful, but because money can be made from it. Often lamp and shade were made by different artists and if one can find a signed lamp, it can sell for thousands of pounds.
