Art Deco Dressing Tables
Dressing tables are becoming more popular in today's society as people are searching for ways to add more style, elegance and romance in their lives. They also offer a practical storage solution. One way that some are doing it is by adding Art Deco dressing tables to their bedrooms.
Dressing tables first originated in the 1700's. Also called toilette tables, they were used by women to keep their cosmetics in. The word “toilette” came from the cloth that Victorian women used to wrap their make-up in before storing it. These dressing tables lost their popularity in the nineteenth centuries but regained popularity with the advent of the Art Deco style.
When dressing tables first were produced, they were often large with elaborate carvings and mirrors which were suited to the larger bedrooms of that time. However, Art Deco dressing tables were made in a more minimalist style and were a better fit for the smaller bedrooms in homes during the 1920's and 1930's.
Art Deco dressing tables were often made of oak, maple or walnut and usually had a glossy varnish, which was typical of the style. The mirrors were simple, often in round or long oval shapes. The matching stool would fit under the dressing table, to be pulled out when needed.
Art Deco dressing tables were often decorated with practical, but also beautiful items such as dressing table sets which consisted of brushes and hand-held mirrors, often made of silver, and would be laid out on a platter or protected in a beautiful case. Small glass bottles and containers were also displayed containing perfumes and powders.
