Using the right accessories, textures and colours, Art Deco furniture can be adapted very easily. It is because of this flexibility, that Art Deco is still so popular today.
Art Deco chests of drawers are most common in bedrooms where storage was typically limited in most homes in the 1920's and 1930's. Art Deco chests of drawers were made with the highest quality woods, often using different types of solid wood or wood veneers. Some popular woods that were used in the Art Deco period were walnut, oak, maple and rosewood. Typically the wood or veneer was highly glazed to give a glossy finish. Often there would be a mirror affixed to the top of the chest for maximum functionality and the chest would typically be positioned in a dressing room. The size of Art Deco chest of drawers varied from the smallest miniatures to tallboys and therefore the numbers of drawers differ. Instead of being sat directly on the floor, most Art Deco chest of drawers are supported by wonderfully carved legs.
Art Deco chests were not always built in the typical rectangular shape. Sometimes they have curved edges, or were built in a step pattern. The drawers were often decorated with brass or iron pulls. Sometimes Art Deco chest of drawers were covered in mirrors instead of bare wood and these mirrored chest of drawers are highly sought after today.
