Art Deco Bureaux
Before the days of email and long distance phone calls, the primary form of communication was writing letters. Because of this, a staple piece of furniture in a drawing room or living room was a bureau, often referred to as a writing bureau, writing desk or writing table. The Art Deco bureaux were still very popular during the 1920's and 1930's at the height of the Art Deco period and were finely handcrafted.
Solid wood was almost always used and often more exotic woods such as mahogany were the choice for the more expensive tastes. For those with a more modest budget, oak or walnut was also a lovely choice, made even more beautiful when varnished or polished, bringing out the natural beauty of the wood grain.
Art Deco bureau were always built with drawers, often having decorative metal pulls, so there was plenty of room for writing paper, pens, inks and other writing supplies. The slanted drawing surface would open to reveal small shelves with nooks and crannies and sometimes even hidden drawers for important papers. Some Art Deco bureaux would also serve as a display case, with shelves and glass doors for all one's collectibles.
Whether one has a traditional or modern style of decorating, Art Deco furniture, including Art Deco bureaux, can, with the appropriate accessories, colours and textures, suite any style of room. One of the reasons the Art Deco style is still loved today is because of this flexibility to fit into many different styles of decor.
